What Is Al-Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk?
As the cover says, Al-Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk is "a series for teaching the Arabic language to speakers of other languages". It teaches Modern Standard Arabic through everyday situations, so learners build the four skills together: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The whole course is written in Arabic, with pictures doing the work of translation, which is why it is used by students of many different nationalities in schools, Arabic institutes and self-study around the world.
The course is arranged in books, and Book 1 is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers Units 1 to 8 and Part 2, this book, continues with Units 9 to 16. Each unit is built around one theme and divided into numbered lessons that continue from Part 1. For example, Unit 13 is about travel (السفر) and includes Lesson 115.
How the Lessons Work
Picture-based speaking drills
Speaking exercises (الكلام) give a short model dialogue and then ask you to exchange the dialogue with a partner using new words, each shown with a colour picture. In the travel unit, for example, learners practise asking for tickets, passports and luggage, with flags and maps of Arab countries to talk about.
Listening with the series audio
The QR code on the cover opens the audio for the series, so you can hear the dialogues and new words read correctly and repeat them. This matters most for learners studying on their own without a teacher.
Reading, writing and structures
Alongside speaking and listening, each unit builds reading and writing practice and introduces new sentence patterns step by step, so the grammar is learned through use rather than as a separate list of rules.
Which Book Should I Buy?
If you are a complete beginner, start with Al-Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk Book 1 Part 1 (Units 1–8) and then move on to this book, Part 2 (Units 9–16). Together the two parts make up Book 1, the beginner level of the course. Book 2 is the next level, for students who have finished Book 1. Many people search for "Bayna Yadayk book 2" when they mean Part 2 of Book 1, so please check the cover: this book says كتاب الطالب الأول، الجزء الثاني (Student's Book 1, Part 2).
Tips for Studying on Your Own
• Listen before you read. Play the audio for each new dialogue first, then follow the text.
• Say the drills out loud. Even without a partner, take both roles in the speaking exercises.
• Keep to one unit at a time. Finish each unit's lessons in order before moving on, because new words and structures build on earlier ones.
• Review regularly. Go back to earlier units every few weeks so the vocabulary stays fresh.
Who This Book Is For
• Adults learning Arabic as a second language who have finished Book 1 Part 1.
• Residents of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf who want to speak and read everyday Arabic.
• Students of Arabic institutes and Islamic schools using the series as their course book.
• Muslims who want to understand the language of the Qur'an and start with a strong base in standard Arabic.
