What the Book Is About
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote al-Tibb al-Nabawi as part of his great study of the Prophet's ﷺ way of life, Zad al-Ma'ad. His purpose was to show that the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ cares for the body as well as the soul. He collects the hadith on sickness and cure, explains what they mean, and compares them with the medical knowledge of his own time. The back cover sums it up well: a treasure for every Muslim household, written more than six centuries ago yet more relevant than ever in an age that is turning back to natural health.
The book closes with a long reference section on foods, herbs and natural substances, which is why many families keep it on the shelf as a health reference rather than reading it once.
Key Topics Inside
Every illness has a cure
The book opens with the Prophet's ﷺ teaching that Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down its cure, and explains how seeking treatment goes hand in hand with trust in Allah.
Three kinds of healing
Ibn al-Qayyim divides Prophetic medicine into natural remedies, spiritual remedies such as the Qur'an and du'a, and treatments that combine the two, with examples of each from the Sunnah.
Diseases of the heart
Before the body, he turns to the heart: how it is harmed by doubts and desires, and how it is healed by the Qur'an, remembrance of Allah, ruqyah with Surah Al-Fatihah, and protection from the evil eye.
The Prophet's ﷺ guidance for specific illnesses
Chapters cover fever, headaches, stomach complaints, eye problems, wounds and skin conditions, as well as the Prophet's ﷺ guidance on plague and epidemics, including not entering or leaving a land where plague has broken out.
Remedies from the Sunnah
Honey, black seed, hijama (cupping), Zamzam water, Ajwa dates, talbinah, olive oil and milk are each explained with the hadith that mention them and the benefits attributed to them.
Food, drink, sleep and daily habits
The Prophet's ﷺ moderation in eating and drinking, his sleeping habits and his guidance on cleanliness are presented as everyday principles for preventing illness.
An A–Z guide to natural remedies
The final part is an alphabetical reference of foods, plants and natural substances, with a short note on each and how it was used.

Not the Same as the Quranic & Prophetic Healing Handbook
Many people search for "the Quranic and Prophetic Healing Handbook" when they mean this book, or the other way round. They are different works. Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet ﷺ is the original classic by Ibn al-Qayyim, written in the 8th century AH, and many later healing guides draw on it.
