What Makes a Word-by-Word Urdu Quran Different

A normal Urdu translation gives you the meaning of a whole verse in flowing Urdu. That is ideal for understanding the message, but it does not show you which Urdu word belongs to which Arabic word. Maani ul Quran breaks every verse into its individual words. Each Arabic word sits in its own box with its Urdu meaning printed directly beneath it, so you can see exactly what you are reciting. A fluent Urdu translation is given as well, so you can read the complete meaning of the verse once you have studied its words.

This is the method many teachers use to help students "learn the translation" of the Qur'an rather than simply read one. After a few surahs you begin to recognise the same words again and again, and you start to understand parts of the Qur'an directly when you hear them in salah.

How Each Page Is Laid Out

The pages are printed in a clear grid on a light blue background. Every Arabic word, with full harakat, has its own cell, and its Urdu meaning appears directly underneath in smaller type. Verse numbers are marked in circles, and the surah name, Juz number and page number appear at the top of each page, so you can follow a lesson or find a passage quickly. Because the words line up in neat rows, it is easy to cover the Urdu with a card and test yourself on the meaning of each Arabic word.

Learning Quranic Arabic Through Urdu

The cover describes the book as covering word-by-word meaning, fluent translation and Quranic grammar together. That combination is what makes it useful for study rather than just reading. Start with the surahs you already know by heart, such as Al-Fatihah and the short surahs of the last Juz. Read the Arabic, then each word's Urdu meaning, then the fluent translation. Note words that repeat, because a small number of common words make up a large part of the Qur'an. Over a few months many readers find they understand much more of what they hear in Taraweeh and the daily prayers.

About the Translator: Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf was a Pakistani scholar of the Qur'an and Sunnah, best known for his Urdu tafsir Ahsan-ul-Bayan, one of the most widely read Urdu commentaries of the Qur'an. He wrote and edited many works for Darussalam, and his clear, faithful Urdu is the reason his translations are used in homes and madrasahs across Pakistan, India and the Gulf.

Who This Quran Is For
