Why Sahih al-Bukhari is the most authentic book after the Quran

Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (194-256 AH, 810-870 CE) was born in Bukhara in Central Asia and travelled across the Muslim world collecting hadith, from Makkah and Madinah to Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, Damascus and Egypt. He is reported to have examined around 600,000 narrations and spent about 16 years selecting the ones that met his standard. It is also reported that he made ablution and prayed two rak'ahs before recording each hadith in the book.

His conditions were stricter than any before him. Every narrator in a chain had to be upright and precise in memory, the chain had to be unbroken, and each narrator had to be known to have actually met the one he narrated from. The result, which he titled Al-Jami al-Musnad as-Sahih, was accepted by the scholars of hadith as the most reliable book after the Book of Allah, with Sahih Muslim ranked beside it. Together the two are known as the Sahihayn.

About the translator, Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan
